Into the future
By the end of the 1980s the NCC was
using the tag line ‘get up and go’ as
part of an industry-wide advertising
campaign to encourage people to try
caravanning. If you look online you
can still find some examples of the
adverts, including one from 1990
(bit.ly/1990GetUpAndGo), which
begins: “For sale – weekend home
with views across the South Downs
and the Yorkshire Dales.” Could

“The caravan industry
flourished during the 1970s –
the NCC’s projects kept pace”
Holiday caravans tended to be big tourers in the 1950s and
sites had few facilities. The 1960 Act tightened planning
regulations and, with NCC leadership, the
industry progressed
caravanning lifestyle rather than
focussing on the product?
In more recent years there’s been
a significant emphasis on leisure
vehicle security and build quality
at the NCC, with the development
of the Central Registration and
Identification Scheme (CRiS) in the
’90s, the NCC Approved badge in 2011,
TowCheck in 2015 to allow good car
and caravan matching, and more.
We’ve also seen NCC Events develop
its caravan and motorhome events
at Birmingham’s NEC into unrivalled
showcases for the industry.
The tough pandemic years tested
the NCC and the wider industry
as a whole in ways we could not
previously have imagined and things
haven’t got much easier in the
subsequent years. But we can be
assured the NCC continues to be a
powerful body today, representing its
members at all levels and from across
the entire supply chain, and speaking
industry truths to those in power. >
