Caravan production virtually stops due to WW2 though
several caravan manufacturers get Government orders
for ambulances, trailers and mobile offices. Eccles works
solidly for five years.

The Wellington Chalet was
designed for living and
seen as a possible help to
the housing shortage.
Sadly it didn’t succeed.

215 manufacturers
produce 3,000
caravans a year
as the nation
goes in search of
holidays to help
recover from war.
1976
NCC advertises its Certification
Scheme for touring caravans.
NCC lobby
Parliament
to cut
VAT on
caravans.
The NCC Benevolent Fund
is set up – and is still helping
people in need today.

NCC Caravan Service Centre
Scheme launched and backed
by the RAC (inspections) and
supported by The Caravan Club.

caravan manufacturers
base themselves in Hull.
A caravan and a caravan
site are defined in law
for the first time.
The National Caravan
Council is founded by
Bill Whiteman.
The early 1960s sees
the van conversion
industry grow as
the campervan
gains a following.
Eccles Caravans, the world’s
largest caravan manufacturer,
produces the first affordable
tourer costing £130.
The Earls Court Caravan Show
is first dedicated event for the
industry run by the NCC.

The NCC launches its
Certification Scheme for
mobile homes (tourers,
motorhomes and holiday
caravans became part of
the scheme later).
Popular TV
show Golden
Shot features
caravans as
prizes in the
late 60s.
