WELCOME TO TOWING WITH AN EV
Electric vehicles – setting the record straight on their towing
capabilities as we head towards the Government’s 2035 deadline
At the NCC, we’ve heard too many
times the rumour that you cannot tow
with an electric vehicle, or EV for short.
Or that they do not make very good tow
cars. The good news is that’s completely
wrong – you can and they do!
Increasing numbers of EVs are being
homologated – in effect, approved –
to tow. That number looks set to only
increase as the Government drives
towards its commitment to end the sale
of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars
by 2030 – with all new cars and vans
being fully zero emission by 2035.
And – more myth-busting good news
– EVs can make very good tow cars too
with exceptional torque and power.
They can produce maximum torque
immediately, which can help if you
need to accelerate to merge safely into
traf昀椀c.
It’s worth pointing out at this stage in
the pathway to the Government’s 2035
target that not all EVs are approved
to be tow cars – so always check
before buying one so you can begin
or continue your pastime of hitching
up car and caravan to tour the UK and
beyond.
Our handy guide has been designed
to cover all the basics of what you need
to know, complete with a range of
practical advice and top tips to ensure
you’re ready for the road.
